もともと【元々】

1 〔元来〕 from the first [beginning, outset]; originally; always; 〔生来〕 by nature; naturally.

●元々人間はまねが好きだ. People are born imitative. | Love of imitation is inherent in human nature.

・彼は元々怠け者だ. Laziness is innate in him. | He is inherently [was born] a lazy creature.

・その本, 元々はだれの物なの? Who originally owned that book? | Who is the original owner of that book?

2 〔損も得もなく元の通りであること〕

●万一失敗しても元々だ. If I failed, I'd be none the worse than before.

・彼は負けて元々と思ってチャンピオンに挑戦した. He challenged the champion as he thought that even if he were beaten, he would be none the worse for it.
